American museum holds groundbreaking exhibition of Vietnam's ceramics

PDFPrintE-mail

The largest ever exhibition in the US devoted exclusively to Vietnamese ceramics is being held at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama from January 22 to April 8.

The "Dragon and Lotus Blossoms" exhibition features Vietnamese ceramics, some of which dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries.

The exhibition is co-curated by Donald Wood and John Stevenson, leading experts on Asian Art in the US.

An accompanying book, "Dragons and Lotus Blossoms: Vietnamese Ceramics from the Birmingham Museum of Art," is also on display.  The work, co-authored by Wood and Stevenson, with a contribution from independent expert Philippe Truong, catalogues the collection's contents and the history of Vietnamese ceramics.

Wood was quoted by the newswire Vietnamplus as saying that there are few accounts of remarkable history of Vietnamese pottery in English.

According to Wood, the show is a great opportunity for the American people to contemplate such rare works of art in their country, as well as to “study the diverse history of Vietnam, a country which plays not only an important role in American history but also in our future.”

Wood added that historically, Vietnam has produced the best pottery in Southeast Asia. Though first learning from the Chinese, Vietnamese artisans developed their own unique style and techniques of production.

The Birmingham's collection, which has being amassed since the 1970s, together with two collections of Vietnamese ceramics at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the New York Museum of Art are the largest ones of its kind in US history.
